Agricultural Pest Control & Farm Pest Management

Practical Pest Prevention for Farms Across Somerset, Devon and Dorset

Protect Feed Stores, Buildings and Your Farm’s Pest-Management Records

Rodent activity can contaminate stored feed and damage packaging, buildings and equipment. Smyth Pest Control helps farmers and rural businesses investigate the problem and plan suitable control around livestock, storage and daily operations.

Based in Wadeford near Chard, Warren brings over 25 years’ experience and BPCA membership. We discuss the site, existing activity, access and prevention before agreeing treatment or a regular maintenance programme.

Farm Pest Control Services

  • Rat and mouse management: Inspection, monitoring, suitable control and proofing advice for barns, stables, feed stores and working yards.
  • Feed stores and agricultural buildings: Assess rodent access, spillages, storage arrangements and building defects that may support activity.
  • Planned farm visits: Regular checks and review of activity, with the areas and frequency agreed for the site.
  • Farm assurance record support: Documented inspections and treatment findings, with plans and recording requirements discussed against the scheme your farm follows.

Farm pest control starts with the site

Feed, shelter and access routes can make farm buildings attractive to rodents. Activity may change as stock moves, stores fill, buildings are opened or seasonal work alters the site. An inspection considers these conditions alongside the signs of pests.

Tell us which buildings are affected, what you have noticed and whether there is an existing control programme. We can discuss treatment for an active problem or ongoing inspections and monitoring.

Rat and mouse control on farms

Rodent activity may show through droppings, gnawing, damaged packaging, tracks or repeated sightings. Finding signs around one store does not necessarily establish the full extent of the problem.

Our rat and mouse control service considers evidence, possible access and conditions supporting activity. Treatment choices are assessed for the setting, with prevention and monitoring forming part of the discussion.

Tell us about previous control work and any recurring hotspots. Avoid moving or adding treatment materials without discussing how this affects the existing programme.

Barns, feed stores and agricultural buildings

We assess relevant areas such as feed storage, building edges, service gaps, doors and spaces around stored materials. The layout and how supplies are handled can affect both pest access and the ability to inspect.

Recommendations may include addressing spillages, improving storage arrangements or considering suitable building repairs. Some changes are for the farm team or a relevant tradesperson to carry out; we explain what the inspection has identified.

Livestock areas and working yards

Tell us which animals use the site and where feed, water and bedding are kept. The movement of livestock, machinery, staff and visitors needs to be considered when arranging an inspection and placing any control equipment.

Share site access instructions and any biosecurity procedures in advance. We discuss visit arrangements around the areas needing attention and the practical requirements of your farm.

Agricultural pest control maintenance agreements

Regular scheduled visits give farms a consistent way to inspect, monitor and review pest activity. A maintenance agreement can cover agreed buildings and areas, with findings and recommended actions recorded.

The visit schedule is discussed around the site, pest history, seasonal use and any relevant assurance requirements. A changing problem may need a different response from routine monitoring, so tell us when new signs appear between visits.

When enquiring, explain the areas to be included and whether you want help reviewing an existing programme or setting up a new arrangement.

Pest-control records and Red Tractor assurance

Our agricultural maintenance agreements can support the pest-management part of your farm assurance arrangements through scheduled inspections, monitoring and documented activity.

Useful records describe the inspection date, areas checked, findings and recommended actions. Plans and treatment records may also be relevant to the programme and the scheme your farm follows.

Red Tractor requirements vary by farming sector. For example, its Beef & Lamb vermin-control standards and Crops & Sugar Beet vermin-control standards set out their own requirements. Share the current standard or assessor feedback when contacting us so the inspection, schedule and documentation needs can be discussed.

A pest-control agreement supports your management arrangements; it does not guarantee certification or an audit outcome. The farm still needs to act on relevant findings and meet its wider scheme requirements.

Considering livestock, pets and wildlife

Pest-control decisions on rural sites need to take account of non-target animals and the wider environment. Tell us about livestock, farm pets, wildlife concerns and areas where people or animals could encounter equipment.

We assess the proposed control approach for the site and explain relevant precautions. Keep monitoring and treatment equipment in its agreed position and follow the instructions provided. Report changes in animal access or building use so the arrangements can be reviewed.

Reducing the conditions that attract pests

Good prevention focuses on the food, shelter and access that pests use. Depending on the inspection, practical recommendations may cover feed spillages, secure storage, waste, vegetation near buildings, clutter or gaps in structures.

These measures work alongside monitoring and any necessary treatment. Addressing a recurring source of access or food can be an important part of improving control over time.

Seasonal changes and recurring farm problems

Harvest, changes in stored materials, livestock housing and alterations to buildings can change pest pressures. Let us know about planned changes or fresh activity so the monitoring programme can reflect the site as it is being used.

If a problem repeatedly returns, we can review the evidence and discuss whether further investigation, adjustments to monitoring or prevention work are needed.

Farmhouses and other rural premises

A pest problem in a farmhouse may need a separate assessment from activity in the agricultural buildings. Our pest control services overview explains the domestic, commercial and agricultural services available.

Tell us about any connected buildings or shared areas when enquiring. We can discuss the scope of work across the premises rather than assuming every part of a rural property has the same requirements.

Agricultural pest control coverage

We work across Somerset and parts of Devon and Dorset. See our areas we cover and provide your farm postcode so we can confirm coverage and suitable visit arrangements.

Please include directions or access details if the working yard has a different entrance from the postal address. Tell us who will meet us and which buildings can be inspected.

Agricultural pest control: common questions

Can you provide regular farm visits?

Yes. We offer pest control maintenance agreements with a schedule and scope discussed around your farm and requirements.

Can the service help with Red Tractor pest-management records?

We can discuss scheduled inspections, monitoring and documented pest-control activity alongside your scheme requirements. Send the relevant current standards or feedback so we can agree what is needed.

Do all farms need the same inspection frequency?

No. Site conditions, activity, the scope of work and the relevant assurance sector all need consideration when agreeing a programme.

What should I send for a farm pest-control quote?

Include your postcode, the type and approximate number of buildings, livestock or storage involved, signs of activity and whether you need an active treatment or ongoing maintenance.
